Violence, excessive workload and poor skill-mix are the most significant causes of stress for nurses in emergency departments, suggests Australian research.

Dealing with a mass casualty incident and the death or sexual abuse of a child were ranked next most stressful. Researchers surveyed 154 emergency nurses in Western Australia.

The authors added: 'The most frequently cited additional stressors were lack of, or outdated equipment, shift work, patient's relatives at triage, balancing family issues and work, dealing with mental health clients, and insufficient training for emergency department nurses.'
