I've just started a new job as Registered Manager/Addiction Nurse Specialist, at a new Residential Rehab for Healthcare Professionals with Addiction and/or Co-occurring Mental Health Problems. The only one in the UK. It amases me that nurses STILL don't seem to have got our "Act together" when it comes to supporting our selves or our peers. The Doctors and Dentists Trust have a very active membership and organisation for financial support for members who need treatment. I can hardly believe my ears when I hear some Occupational Health or HR depts etc who insist there is very little or no need or problem to be addressed. With an attitude like that, no wonder Healthcare Professionals try to hide their problem. Unfortunately, it seems that it is not until a nurse is up before the NMC, that their addiction comes to light. Even then, how many get the oppertunity to go into treatment? Not many and of those who do, the shame and guilt of being the "Carer" can be so great, that we hide behind our role and deflect from our own issues. What do others think?
