New online training course in CBT

Mental health nurses can develop their cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) skills using a new online tool developed but Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Trust.

PRAXIS CBT is designed for health professionals who are clinically qualified but have no particular knowledge of CBT.

The 12-week part-time course involves interactive online training as well as face-to-face supervision. The online element includes text-based information, video clips and interactive exercises that build up to create a handbook. Learners will then meet with a supervisor to discuss progress and gain feedback.

After completion of the course there is also an opportunity to study for academic credits up to the level of a postgraduate certificate at the University of Cumbria. 

Professor Ivy-Marie Blackburn, a consultant in clinical psychology at the trust, was involved in producing content for the course. 'There is currently a national focus on CBT training – this will educate a large number of professionals in a cost-effective way, without them having to leave the work place,' she said.
