Scheme to encourage nurses into older people's services

Student nurses at the University of Nottingham are being encouraged to consider nursing vulnerable older people as a rewarding career choice.

The independent sector provider Craegmoor Healthcare, in association with the Alzheimer's Society, are running four 'Information Days' at the University throughout the year.

Aimed at nurses who are undertaking adult nurse training or psychiatric nurse training, the initiative hopes to encourage future nurses to enter the care home sector.

Students can undertake work placements and talk to staff from Craegmoor's Ashfield Lodge, in Lincolnshire, who hope to change people's negative assumptions about caring for older people.

Manager at Ashfield Lodge, Polly Craig, who set up the programme, said 'This initiative aims to dispel the myths about older people services and show that it is an area you need to be highly skilled to work in.'
