Nurse to head up new school of health science

A nurse academic has been appointed overall head of a new school of health sciences at Southampton University.

Later this year the new school will bring together three of the university's healthcare divisions – health professions and rehabilitation sciences, nursing and midwifery, and the health care innovation.

Jessica Corner, currently professor of cancer and palliative care at the nursing school, will head-up the new combined school for its first five years, starting on 1 August.

Professor Corner was the first nurse to be awarded the Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother Fellowship, by Nuffield Trust in 2001, and also holds the post of chief clinician at Macmillan Cancer Support.

'It is an exciting time for health care in the UK and internationally as we look to address future challenges of people more actively managing their own health, while also needing to provide radically different support to people with long-term health conditions,' professor Corner said. 'The new school will be developing a cadre of health professionals who are equipped to address these challenges.'
