Nurse Consultant aims to learn stroke lessons from Finland

Caroline Lawson, a nurse consultant from Yeovil District Hospital in Somerset, has won funding to carry out research into stroke services in Finland.

Ms Lawson teamed up with Alan Bartle from the Stroke Association to make a bid for funding from Nuffield Trust Joint International Study Award – given to encourage innovation in healthcare and changes in practice.

'My research had revealed that stroke services in Finland cost less than in England, yet patients have a better outcome. I wanted to find out why this was and if we could learn from their success and use their methods here,' said Ms Lawson.

They will visit Finland for a week in November where they will meet up with a leading stroke physician in Helsinki and look at stroke services provided both in acute and community hospitals.

It is hoped that their visit will help improve services for stroke patients across the south west of England.
