Part-time degree for nurses who want to become midwives

A new work-based degree programme has been launched for nurses who wish to re-train as midwives.
Qualified nurses will be able to undertake the Pre-registration Midwifery (shortened) Work-based Learning BSc (Hons) at the University of Hertfordshire from January 2009. Upon gaining the qualification, they will be able to apply to be added to part 2 of the NMC's professional register.
The course will involve a mix of hospital placement, face-to-face teaching and online study, and can be completed over 18 months on a full-time basis or part-time over two years.
Midwifery practice will make up 60% of the course, with students working alongside a registered midwife on a maternity ward. Placements will be in one of four local hospitals in Barnet, Stevenage, Welwyn Garden City or Watford.
A diploma in nursing is required as a minimum for enrolment on the course. More information on the course is available at www.herts.ac.uk
