Second London trust backs Speak out Safely

East London Foundation Trust has become the latest provider to pledge its staff can speak out safely by backing Nursing Times’ campaign.

The trust provides mental health and community services to a population of almost one million over four London boroughs.

It is the third mental health provider and the second trust in the capital to back the Speak out Safely campaign.

In a statement director of nursing Jonathan Warren said it was “vital” to the delivery of high quality care that staff knew they could raise concerns at any time.

He added: “We are working hard to ensure we have a listening and learning culture in the trust where these conversations happen as part of our day to day working practice.

“We want our staff to know it is ok to talk to their colleagues and managers about issues as this is crucial to help us improve the care we deliver to patients and maintain high standards.”

  • It's all very well for these Trusts to be signing up to an idea in a nursing publication. But what does it actually mean in real terms? What is being put in place to protect staff? What measurable difference is being made? What is changing?

It also makes me wonder that NHS trusts are being 'cajoled/shamed' into signing up to a campaign which, if they were carrying their role lawfully and properly, should not be necessary. In law, nurses and healthcare workers have all the protection they need........if managers and executives didn't lie and deceive. Those same managers and executives are signing up to this campaign.
