Alzheimers drug patch warning issued

  • Comment

An overdose warning has been issued over use of a patch to treat Alzheimer’s disease.

The rivastigmine (Exelon) transdermal patch is used to treat mild to moderate dementia.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said it had received reports of multiple patches being applied, patches not being removed from patients, and patches being applied to non-recommended parts of the body.

The MHRA said in cases of suspected overdose all patches should be removed immediately and none should be reapplied for 24 hours.
