Antibiotics not as effective as appendicectomy

  • Comment

Treating acute appendicitis with antibiotics is not as effective as appendicectomy, according to French researchers.

They assessed amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid with emergency appendectomy in 243 patients.

They found peritonitis was significantly more frequent in the antibiotic group than the appendicectomy group.

The authors said: “Emergency appendicectomy remains the gold standard.”
