Boots to prescribe Viagra for erectile dysfunction sufferers

  • Comment

Patients with erectile dysfunction can get Viagra on prescription from Boots pharmacies following the launch of the first pharmacist-led service for erectile dysfunction.

Pharmacists will try to establish the cause of the problem during a half-hour consultation and, if they believe the treatment is suitable, can offer a course of prescribed -only drugs.

Patients will complete a pre-screening questionnaire, undergo a series of blood tests and a prescription will be made once all health problems have been ruled out.

The service will cost £55 for the initial screening and then £26.59 for four tablets. Patients can return for a repeat prescription and a check-up after finishing the first supply.

The service was piloted in Manchester and men from all over the country travelled to use the service.

Pharmacist James Longden, who led the trial, said: ‘We had men coming not just from the North West but from all over. They were really positive about it. Sometimes it can be a bit of an embarrassing subject to talk about and many didn’t know where to turn to for help.’
