Burnham commits financial support to student nurses

  • Comment

Health secretary Andy Burnham has made an “in principle commitment” to financially supporting as many student nurses as possible.

Speaking at UNISON’s annual health conference yesterday, he said: “I recognise we need to do more to support students and I know that [UNISON national officer] Mike Jackson and others have been doing large amounts of work with the Department of Health just before the election.

“I know for people returning after a career change the costs can be huge and a massive obstacle. I want to get an in principle commitment to giving support to everyone we can.

He explained: “I wasn’t able to make a definitive statement in advance of the election because we wanted to say something that’s of genuine value.”

The issue would hopefully be addressed fully in a spending review this Autumn, he said.
