Care burden impacts on health

  • Comment
More than three quarters of carers feel that their health has suffered as a result of their responsibilities, a survey has shown.

The research, conducted as part of national Carers Week, showed 77% of carers felt their health is worse because of the strain of caring.

Of the 2,000 respondents, 95% said they regularly cover up or disguise the fact their health is suffering in order to continue their caring responsibilities.

A fifth of carers said they ignored feeling ill ‘all the time’ and almost one in four say they frequently feel unable to cope with their day-to-day duties due to the physical and emotional stresses of the role and a further 64% say they are occasionally unable to cope.
