Time to fix your workforce challenges

The biggest issue for healthcare providers is the shortage of nurses, so we’ve teamed up with those in charge of workforce planning to create an event to try to solve those issues

Recent NHS Digital workforce statistics revealed that the number of vacant nursing jobs has reached a new high – one in 10 nurses are leaving each year. As of September 2017, nursing and midwifery has the highest percentage of unfilled full-time equivalent roles out of all NHS staff groups.

The figures being released by the Nursing and Midwifery Council on the size of its register highlight the issues with fewer nurses joining from Europe, and more registrants leaving 
to return to Europe. 
This is creating a perfect storm in terms of workforce size. So what can be done?

The shortage of nurses 
is a universal problem for many organisations, which 
is why we have put together 
a programme at this event 
to help guide chief nurses, deputy chief nurses and their senior teams to come up with some solutions to the workforce challenges.

The programme will invite senior representatives from NHS Improvement, Health Education England, Unison, 
MiP and London Southbank University to discuss and debate the key challenges in recruiting and retaining staff. Chief nurses will have a safe space to raise their concerns about workforce planning and share strategies and expertise to help them combat the issues around staffing.

Representatives from education, community, care and the acute sector will share what they believe needs to happen to strengthen and edify the workforce to provide safe, quality care.

We will look closely at how to recruit the best talent to your organisation and how to retain them. We’ll consider the shifting priorities for the NHS, independent providers and adult social care, and look at how workforce must change to support that.

Delegates and speakers 
will also consider how to manage a talent pipeline to ensure that nurse leaders have a succession plan in place.

There are some excellent sessions on the practical things you can do to build resilience, and how to reduce burnout and stress. Reducing sickness absence will come under the spotlight and there will be a session on creating a culture that is supportive and helps to retain staff. There will also be a special session on how to recruit successfully overseas.
