Friarage nurses recognised for mentoring skills

Nurses in Northallerton’s Friarage Hospital accident and emergency department have received an accolade for the standard of support given to student nurses.

Staff Nurses Kim Connolly and Sadah Laheji have received the Outstanding Practice Mentor Award from Teesside University in recognition of their exemplary clinical teaching and mentoring skills for student nurses.

Clinical sister in A&E Sue Barton said “We are very proud that Sadah and Kim have received this important award – it is testament to their dedication and hard work in supporting students during their time in A&E.”

Student nurse Emma Ritchie, who is in the third year of her studies and undergoing her final placement in A&E, said: “Kim and Sadah have been brilliant in the support they have given me. I can’t praise them enough.”

  • Myself and Kim are very suprised and humbled to receive this award, and I would like to add without the support we receive from the rest of the A & E team in the mentoring of students which is always a joint effort, I would not be able to fufill my role as a mentor and I wouldnt be the staff nurse I am today. A & E is an exciting and fulfilling placement for students but sometimes it can be hard for students to deal with the difficult situations that arise and it is only due to the hardwork and determination that students put in to this placement that enable them to progress and pass their placement. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank all students both past and present for their hard work and would encourage other students to consider accident and emergency as a placement.
