Oestrogen-only HRT increases asthma risk

  • Comment

A study has found that women taking oestrogen-only HRT have an increased risk of developing asthma symptoms for the first time, compared with those who have never had the treatment.

This study, published in Thorax, explored the association between the use of different types of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and the risk of developing asthma in postmenopausal women.

The French researchers conducted a prospective study from 1990 to 2002 using biennial questionnaires as part of the French E3N cohort study.

Previous studies have suggested that female hormones might play a role in asthma and that HRT might increase the risk of asthma in postmenopausal women.
