Young people with asthma suffer from anxiety

  • Comment

Symptoms of anxiety are a problem for up to 40% of adolescents with asthma, according to US research.

The University of Cincinnati surveyed 150 children aged between 11 and 18 living in urban settings and found that greater anxiety was linked to perceptions that asthma negatively affected their life and emotions and that the condition was difficult to control. These negative perceptions were, in turn, related to greater asthma symptoms.

The researchers suggested that targeting illness perceptions in adolescents with asthma and anxiety may help reduce asthma symptoms.
