People affected by cancer often feel isolated because of the emotional, financial, practical and physical impact of cancer.
As Macmillan has found, one in four people diagnosed with cancer in the UK will lack support from family or friends during their treatment and recovery. When Lloyd was diagnosed with lung cancer he felt completely lost. ‘I couldn’t see past tomorrow with regards to my business and my home.’ Being self-employed, he was reliant on his income to live and, worried about missing his mortgage payments he even contemplated not having the surgery that was being recommended.
But Emma, a Macmillan Benefits Adviser, helped Lloyd so that he didn’t have to face it alone. Lloyd says: ‘When I was first diagnosed I was completely lost. But sitting down and speaking to Emma gave me direction.’
With Emma’s help, Lloyd successfully applied for a range of benefits. ‘If it wasn’t for Emma doing her job I would have settled for the first payment because I knew very little about the benefits system. And not having to rush back to work allowed me to recover instead of worrying about paying my bills.’
Lloyd has now been clear of cancer for three years – but he won’t forget the support Emma gave him. ‘Emma’s help has meant the world to me recovering. She deserves a gold medal.’
