40 years of Macmillan Professionals

  • Comment

August 2015 marked the 40th anniversary of the very first Macmillan cancer care centre.

Celebrating 40 Years

It’s also 40 years since the first Macmillan nurse was appointed. Since then, we’ve also gone on to fund physiotherapists, dieticians and social workers, to name but a few. Macmillan professionals help in a variety of

ways, such as by supporting people at diagnosis, helping them manage the side effects of treatment and letting them know about other Macmillan services, like Macmillan Grants.

I’m proud to be a Macmillan professional. To support patients with cancer everyday is a real privilege.”

Karen, Macmillan Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist

The number of people affected by cancer who were supported by Macmillan professionals in 2014 was:

·         555,000 by Macmillan nurses

·         275,000 by Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Services staff

·         66,000 by Boots Macmillan Information Pharmacists and Boots Macmillan Beauty Advisors –

·         28,000 by Macmillan Social Workers and Family Support Workers
