The results of the first-ever census of specialist adult cancer nurses in Wales have been published and are now available to download.
Commissioned by Macmillan, the census had a 100% response rate, and unveiled revealed several key findings:
- 79% of the specialist cancer workforce in Wales is classified as a clinical nurse specialist (CNS), and 21% of these are Macmillan post holders.
- The vacancy rate for cancer CNSs appears to be below average for health and social care roles.
- Nearly half of CNSs were reported as being aged 50 or over, with no post holders under 30 – which highlights the need for careful workforce succession planning.
