Air pollution a factor in heart disease and stroke

There is growing evidence that air pollution is a factor in heart disease and stroke, but patients can take steps to protect themselves, the American Heart Association has said in a statement published online in its journal Circulation.

People at high cardiovascular risk should limit their exposure to very polluted air, and health professionals should educate people about how best to do this, the AHA has said. It recommends high risk groups reduce their time outside when the level of fine particulate matter in the air is high, and limit the amount of time they spend in traffic.
