New online resource on cardiovascular health

A new interactive website has been launched to help nurses educate patients to improve their cardiovascular health.

The online resource for health professionals, www.flora-professional.co.uk, has been launched by Flora pro.activ and includes a range of useful resources for nurses.

Michaela Nuttall, coronary heart disease co-ordinator at Bromley Primary Care Trust welcomed the launch. She said: “Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the UK. It is the biggest killer. So a resource that can help nurses to help their patients to lower their cholesterol levels is a good thing. This service reinforces key public health messages such as Change4Life.

“Nurses in the NHS are going through a challenging time so this offers all the information in one place on the healthy heart. It’s a one-stop shop that offers resources in a variety of formats, some of them interactive.

It allows nurses to be in control, so they can access information at a time of their choosing, at home or at work.”

The website provides the latest research into lowering cholesterol and heart disease as well as education and training resources, articles and e-magazines. The online resource includes webinars and presentations as well as information on the range of products from Flora pro.activ; and updates on activheart, a tailor-made lifestyle plan to help patients improve their heart health.

The website will be updated regularly with recently published scientific papers and reports on cardiovascular health. There are useful leaflets and documents to download which are aimed at both patients and healthcare professionals. Hard copies of some of the materials are also available to order.

Training is available on the website in the form of online learning and educational resources, to help nurses develop and widen their knowledge in the area of cardiovascular disease and associated risk factors. The training includes modules accreditted by the RCN, allowing opportunity for Continuing Professional Development.

Unilever nutritionist Dr. Liz Leigh-Firbank, PhD, said: “Flora pro.activ has more than 10 years of experience in helping consumers better manage their heart health through their wide variety of cholesterol-lowering products. This new online resource for healthcare professionals ultimately aids HCPs in helping their patients lower their cholesterol and achieve better cardiovascular health.

“More informed and educated patients can lead to better outcomes, improved health, more efficient and effective physician interactions and, ultimately, cost savings. www.flora-professional.co.uk provides easy access to everyday resources in a user-friendly format, creating a one-stop cardiovascular health shop for healthcare professionals.”

Also available on the website will be quarterly editions of Spread It!, an informative e-magazine which provides the latest news and information on heart health for healthcare professionals. Nurses will be able to register to receive free editions of Spread It! by visiting www.flora-professional.co.uk and clicking on the ‘Registration’ tab at the bottom of the homepage.
