Weight loss surgery improves continence in women, but not men

Gastric banding surgery has been found to improve some continence problems in obese women, but has no effect on the condition in men and damages their ability to achieve an erection.

Scientists at the University of Newcastle investigated the effects of weight loss and time on urinary and sexual function following laparoscopic gastric banding surgery. They found it improved overall urinary continence, quality of life and stress continence problems in women, but worsened urge incontinence.

In men, there was no improvement in continence or overall sexual function after surgery. However, erectile index and orgasmic function worsened over time.

  • Lap band surgery is good option for those having BMI greater than 35. Having lot of advantages, One advantage of lap band surgery is that it is done through laparoscopic surgery. The patient can immediately go home after the surgery.

It is not as painful as other other procedures and normal activities can resumed after 3 to 4 days of the surgery. It will, however, take more than 4 to 6 weeks before the patient can have regular meals.

Weight loss surgery improves continence in women, but not men. It's really difficult to say but you can consult with your medical practitioner at the same time when you go for Lap band surgery. For more information on Lap band surgery please visit:
