COPD linked with increased heart failure risk

  • Comment

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is strongly and independently linked with an increased risk of heart failure, according to a study in the European Journal of Heart Failure.

University of North Carolina researchers assessed 14,000 patients over 15 years.

They found a low FEV1 reading by spirometry “was strongly predictive” of heart failure, independent of other cardiovascular risk markers, including smoking.

“Shortness of breath or impaired vigour should not be ascribed [at first glance] to COPD without careful consideration of the presence of heart failure,” they said.
