Intensive glucose-lowering therapy doubles hypoglycemia risk

  • Comment

Intensive glucose lowering treatment for type 2 diabetes patients does not significantly affect death rates for cardiovascular events, but doubles the risk of severe hypoglycemia, the BMJ reports.

The French research, which collated the results of 13 randomised controlled trials involving 34,533 patients, also found that intensive therapy was associated with reductions in the risk of non-fatal myocardial infarction and microalbuminuria.

The benefit to risk ratio of intensive glucose lowering treatment in preventing macrovascular and microvascular events remains uncertain.
