New device to calculate insulin doses

People with diabetes can get help with working out mealtime insulin doses thanks to a new device.

The FreeStyle InsuLinx blood glucose monitoring system from healthcare firm Abbott is designed to prevent insulin calculation errors.

The system includes a touch screen interface, automated logbook and USB connectivity. It will be available in select countries in Europe from May.

It is estimated that more than 55 million people in Europe are living with diabetes, and of those, many require insulin to manage their condition.

Dr David Kerr, of the Bournemouth Diabetes and Endocrine Centre, Royal Bournemouth Hospital, said: “For my patients who require insulin, the steps involved in the self-care of their diabetes can be complicated and overwhelming.”
