Nurses launch online booking for diabetic eye screening

  • Comment

Specialist nurses at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are offering an online booking option for diabetic eye screening appointments.

The development is part of an initiative by the trust to increase the uptake of diabetic eye screening for younger people with diabetes.

It said the younger generation was renowned nationwide for failing to attend screening appointments and was at highest risk of developing diabetic eye disease.

The interactive system has been designed to allow patients to make appointments using computers, smartphones and tablets, while offering a wide choice of appointments over three screening sites.

Everyone with diabetes, over the age of 12 will be sent an annual invite to attend their screening appointment in which they will be given a provisional appointment time.

A link to the online booking system is included in the letter and from there they will be able to reschedule their appointment to suit them.

Specialist nurse Amanda Stallard, joint programme manager for the trust’s diabetic eye screening programme, said: “The new system is available 24/7 and provides access to our main appointments system with the option of evening appointments available.”
