UK public do not understand diabetes 'threat'

Many UK adults are unconcerned about diabetes, according to a survey.

The poll, conducted for Asda Pharmacy, found that 55% of British people do not see the disease as a health threat.

A spokeswoman explained this could be down to a lack of knowledge about the condition. She revealed 10% of the 2,000 people questioned admitted they did not know what diabetes was.

Around 41% of those in the north and south of England said they were not concerned about the condition, compared to roughly one in three in the Midlands and 31% of Welsh people.

North of the border in Scotland almost half of people said it was not a health consideration, compared to 58% of those in Northern Ireland.

There are 3.7 million Britons with diabetes, with an estimated 850,000 people who have type 2 diabetes but are not aware of it.

Type 2 diabetes, which covers 90% of cases, is caused by the body not being able to produce enough insulin to function properly, while type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that develops when people cannot produce any insulin.

Deputy superintendent pharmacist at Asda, Faisal Tuddy, highlighted how worrying it is that even though studies have shown Britain to be “a nation at risk”, people are still not aware of the disease.

She said: “We offer free blood glucose screening and advice to our shoppers, which can help indicate the likelihood someone has, or is of developing diabetes in the future.”

  • My mother had diabetes and has a nurse, I watched the destruction it caused, I think people are cavalier about it, like they are about HIV. Just take a few pills and your be fine!
