New end of life care post for Lincolnshire

A nurse has been appointed to a new end of life care co-ordinator post at Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Sue Cooper has taken on the new role of Macmillan end of life clinical care co-ordinator, which is being funded by the charity.

She will be providing support, advice and education programmes to nurses and medical teams around all aspects of end of life care. She will also be promoting and advising on the use of end of life care tools such as the Liverpool Care Pathway and Preferred Place of Death.

Ms Cooper said a large part of her role was educating and empowering staff to enable them to deliver the best possible care for dying patients.

She said: “At the end of the day, it is about choice and ensuring people have optimum pain and symptom control. Discussing these issues with patients and their relatives is very difficult and challenging for staff to deal with.”

Ms Cooper has worked as a nurse in Grimsby for the last 28 years specialising in general surgery and gynaecology, and more recently as a community and hospital Macmillan specialist palliative care nurse.

She added: “Ultimately, my role is about improving the quality of care patients and their families receive when they are nearing the end of their life and trying to increase the knowledge and understanding for staff and members of the public about end of life care.”
