Researchers have established the most common types of C difficile in hospitals across Europe.
They looked at stool samples from 509 patients with suspected infection at 97 hospitals across 34 countries. They identified 65 different types of C difficile, of which 014/020 (16 per cent), 001 (9 per cent) and 078 (8 per cent) were the most prevalent. However, only 5 per cent of cases were identified as type 027, which is the most common type found in North America.
Writing online in The Lancet, the authors said: “These findings underscore the importance of local surveillance to detect and control endemic and epidemic C difficile infection.”
