The emerging threat of Candida auris

  • Comment

Candida auris is a species of fungus that grows as a yeast. First identified in 2009 in Tokyo, it can cause serious invasive candidiasis in humans, affecting the bloodstream, central nervous system and internal organs. Patients with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk

The fungus has spread across Asia, Europe and the US, appearing in hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Its resistance to many antifungal drugs means it is an emerging health threat that must be tackled by excellent infection prevention and control practice.
