Healthcare assistant celebrates 60 years working for NHS

A healthcare assistant has notched up 60 years of service to the NHS.

June Foster, 80, who works as a healthcare assistant at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, started in 1953 at the former Freedom Fields Hospital in the city.

The pensioner, who has always worked with children and young people, explained the secret of her long and successful career.

“It comes down to the fact that I do a job I enjoy, I have never not wanted to come to work,” she said.

“You have good days and bad days but I’ve always been very happy coming to work, and grateful that the team I work with haven’t asked me to retire.”

She was presented with a certificate and cake in front of her assembled colleagues to recognise her landmark.

Ann James, chief executive of Plymouth Hospitals Trust, said: “An achievement like this deserves a very personal thank you on behalf of the organisation, the people June has looked after and those that June continues to care for.

“We’re very proud to have June as a member of the team here.”

Well done June. I visited a 92 year old last week who worked as a district nurse for 60 years and did all her visits on a bicycle, she said it had kept her fit and she enjoyed it.

  • Very many congratulations June. Your must be a great asset to your team and to your patients and employers.

It is a great boost to see some positive news about the NHS and their staff for a change. Hopefully you still reflect the majority, but in the media and from the public we just no longer get to hear about it.
