Private provider receives theatre nurse accreditation

Private provider Aspen Healthcare has achieved national quality standards for perioperative practice.

It has become the first healthcare provider to achieve accreditation across all of its theatres from the Association for Perioperative Practice.

“Aspen became the first organisation to use our perioperative audit tool”

The independent provider’s processes and procedures had to meet a defined set of accreditation criteria, focused on patient outcomes.

These included delivering safe and effective healthcare, supporting the provision of high quality care and continually raising standards in the longer term.

Association chief executive Dawn Stott said Aspen was the first organisation to use the charity’s perioperative audit tool to review its theatre departments.

“We worked closely with the assessment teams at the hospitals and they developed a peer review programme to ensure the audit programme was viewed as a risk management tool to ensure high standards of practice,” she said.

“It has been great to work in collaboration with Aspen Healthcare on this accreditation programme and our expert review teams were really impressed with the work and commitment made to further improve their standards in perioperative care,” she added.

Aspen chief executive Des Shiels said the accreditation was recognition of the significant amount of work invested in quality by its theatre teams.

“We are really delighted to be the first organisation to achieve this accreditation and it is recognition of the commitment by our staff to develop very innovative service and practice improvements in our theatre departments,” he said.

Aspen Healthcare operates four acute hospitals, two cancer centres and three day-surgery hospitals in the UK, with 17 operating theatres in total. All its facilities provide both NHS and private treatment.

The Association for Perioperative Practice was established as the National Association of Theatre Nurses in 1964.

It provides education and support to theatre nurses, operating department practitioners and all those working in and around operating departments.
