Why do we wear face masks in theatre?

  • Comments (4)

Is wearing face masks in theatre a necessity, or is it just something we do? Do they protect patients and practitioners, or do they offer little benefit, as some studies have suggested?

What do you think?

Some of the surgeons I work with say they're not necessary, but I wouldn't be without one. I haven't looked at the evidence though.

Are they really necessary for everything? Even giving birth?

we were told that the paper ones are only effective for about three minutes.

we were also shown how to wear them to cover our noses and mouths. why do many doctors including surgeons and nurses only wear them over their mouths or hanging round their necks?

we were also shown how to put on a sterile one in theatres with sterile gloved hands and I believe in doing what I learnt during my training unless I am shown a more effective and up to date way which justifies change for the better.

  • Anonymous | 27-Jun-2011 6:27 pm you say yourself that the masks have been shown to be ineffective after 3 mins. So basically useless for any procedure that lasts longer than this. And that they are essentially useless for those 3 mins anyway as nurses and doctors dont wear them properly.

So why do you sound so resistant to the idea that we should either do away with them or develop ones which work better? You basically say that you know they dont work but you are happy to be a slave to ritual.
