Compression stockings could improve sleep apnoea

  • Comment

Wearing compression stockings may be a simple way to improve obstructive sleep apnoea in patients with chronic venous insufficiency, according to a French study involving 12 patients.

Subjects had a 36% reduction in apneas and hypopnea per hour of sleep when they wore the stockings compared to when they did not, said the researchers online in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

They said: “Compression stockings reduced daytime fluid accumulation in the legs, which in turn reduced the amount of fluid flowing into the neck at night.”
