Severe non-inflam respiratory disease linked to anaemia

  • Comment

One in 10 patients with severe non-inflammatory respiratory disease may suffer from anaemia, a German study shows.

A link between anaemia and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is known, but this study shows it is also frequently found in patients with severe non-inflammatory respiratory diseases.

Researchers reviewed 600 patients with chronic respiratory failure receiving home mechanical ventilation, of which half had obstructive disease and half restrictive disease.

They found 12% in the restrictive group and 15% in the obstructive group had anaemia.
