Poor diabetes control lowers female fertility

  • Comment

Type-1 diabetes has no effect on the rate of ovulation in adolescent girls so long as they maintain control of their metabolism, according to a study.

Chilean scientists compared the salivary progesterone of type-1 diabetic girls during 168 menstrual cycles with 281 cycles of healthy adolescents and found them to be similar when the diabetic girls had a good control of their blood sugar level.

However, when this control was lacking the proportion of ovulatory cycles dropped to just under 30%.
