New treatment plan for adolescent smokers

  • Comment

Adolescents can be helped to stop smoking using Bupropion sustained release combined with contingency management, according to a US study published online in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment.

Over six weeks 134 adolescent smokers received various treatment combinations involving the drug, a placebo and contingency management.

Combining the drug with follow ups to ensure continued treatment led to superior abstinence rates after 12 weeks than either intervention alone.

The authors said there was a “significant need for evidence based treatments for adolescent smoking cessation”.
