Protect alcohol support services, RCN urges

  • Comment

The government and local councils should “protect and promote” referral and access to alcohol advice and support services, according to the Royal College of Nursing’s annual conference.

Delegates at RCN congress voted today in favour of a resolution on alcohol advice and support services, which was put forward today by the college’s older people’s forum.

It was passed by a majority of 97.48% compared to 2.52% against.

The forum said it was “important to acknowledge” that most of the financial costs of alcohol misuse were not down to teenage binge drinkers but rather the cumulative effect of drinking over long periods of time at levels above recommended guidelines.

The RCN’s annual conference is being held in Liverpool this week.
