‘Consent’ remains approved phrase in code of conduct

  • Comment
The NMC has backed down over possible changes to its code of conduct that would have required nurses to ‘secure agreement’ with patients before a procedure rather than ‘gain consent’

The change was proposed to make the language easier for patients to understand but unions and some NMC council members raised concerns that the two phrases meant different things.
As a result the council voted last week to retain the phrase ‘gain consent’.
The new code will be available on the NMC website from 7 January, with a formal launch on 7 April. It will take effect in fitness to practise hearings from May 2008.
