Convicted paedophile caught working as children’s nurse

A convicted paedophile has been caught working as a children’s nurse in a north London hospital.

German-born Lars Gellner, 37, worked agency shifts at Northwick Park Hospital, Harrow, after fleeing Cambodia, where he faced trial for sex attacks on boys aged between 12 and 19.

A police sex offender unit traced Mr Gellner to the hospital and arrested him on duty in Octoberlast year.

A spokesperson for North West London Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed that Mr Gellner had ‘worked a small number of shifts at Northwick Park Hospital’.

‘He was employed through an agency and we can confirm that they conducted an enhanced CRB check,’ he added.

A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said that Mr Gellner passed the agency’s enhanced CRB check because he had no criminal record in Europe, despite being jailed for 10 years in his absence in Cambodia.

Detective Sergeant Sam Hayward said: ‘No blame should be attached to the hospitals. They did everything they could to carry out the criminal checks on him and they came back showing nothing.’

Mr Gellner is currently being held at a remand centre.

  • Bearing in mind you need to be registered with the NMC to work as a registered nurse in the UK, and the NMC also do "police checks" (personal communication with NMC at 3.40pm today) even though you trained in a foreign country, and even if you are employed via an agency, one would expect that the NMC would be in a position to make assurances that it is appropriate for individuals to be on their register. After all, the NMC is responsible for protecting the public. At least that's the reason they give me for charging me my registration fee each year. If CRB checks are limited to European countries, as is suggested in this case, then there's a very high likelihood of others working in the UK that shouldn't be. With this in mind, how on earth can the NMC purport to ensure the safety of the UK public? This is an outrageous state of affairs that requires immediate attention so that it can’t happen again and the vulnerable UK population is truly protected.
