Corpse left on hospital ward for seven hours

A hospital has apologised after a corpse was left on a hospital bed for seven hours.

Staff at Glasgow’s Stobhill Hospital, run by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, agreed to leave the body on the ward until a relative arrived, but there was a further delay in the removal afterwards.

The man died in June, at around 11am but his body was not removed until after 6pm.

A patient on the ward, who had got to know the deceased man during his 10-day stay at the hospital, could see the man’s face even though curtains had been drawn around him.

A spokesperson for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: ‘We have acknowledged there was some delay in the transfer of the patient to the mortuary and steps have already been taken to ensure that this does not happen again.’
