'Dementia must be pre-reg skill'

  • Comment
Nurses should be assessed on their ‘competence, knowledge and skills’ regarding dementia care, as a core part of pre-registration education, according to the Admiral Nurse Service.

People with dementia and their carers ‘need and deserve to have knowledgeable, skilled professionals who have the expertise to support them in coping’, the organisation said in its response to the government’s consultation on proposals for a national dementia strategy for England, which closed last week (NT News, 24 June, p4).

It also wants to see the development of more specialist dementia nurses to provide ‘leadership, expertise and support’ for all professionals in health and social care.
