The diet drug rimonabant leads to significant weight loss in overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes, according to a new study.

The study looked at the effects of the drug on 692 overweight or obese patients with type 2 diabetes who whose blood sugar levels wereinadequately controlled by metformin or sulphonylureas.

They were given 5mg or 20mg a day of rimonabant or aplacebo for a year, along with advice on diet and exercise.

Weight loss averaged 5.3kg in those on the higher dose, 2.3kg for those on the low dose of rimonabantand 1.4kg in the placebo group. Slightly more patients in the higher dose group dropped out due to side effects such as depressed mood, nausea and dizziness.
