    Thank you Jane for clarifying the issues for those members, who like myself, take very little interest in what the RCN is doing or not doing on our behalf these days.

    I was not even aware that there was an issue over ICN membership, and certainly didn't know about the EGM, but that was mainly my own fault.

    As someone who has been a member, activist and former member of the RCN staff, it is worrying to see the organisation being placed in a position where its
    influence is being eroded still further.

    Through the years nursing has always needed a strong voice within the coridoors of power. Many good men (TC) and women (CMH) have fought long and hard to get us where we are today. So lets not let those people down for the sake of our contribution to the ICN and any dispute about how it is run.

    We have been there with our own organisation in the past, but strong leadership and sensible advice has seen us come through those difficult times.

    It is true that the organisation has changed radically over the last 20 years and some of us are not really sure that those changes have enhanced its reputation or that the membership still get value for money. If we want to change things, then we do something about it from within the organosation, not outside it.

    I agree that no decision should be taken at this time until the membership as a whole has had the time and opportunity to make their views known.

    If we as an organisation want to disappear into obscurity and leave the development of nursing worldwide to others, then we must also accept that we will be letting nurses in other countries down at the same time.

    We have to accept that the honours system smacks of croneyism. It isn't the fault of those who are nominated, but those people and organisations who make such nominations.

    It is possible for anyone to nominate a colleague who has spent their life providing direct nursing care. The fact is we don't do it. Perhaps the rank anf file should google The Honours System and make their own nominations.

    I have to say that this is a bit of an insult to those Nurses who for many years have managed to establish meaningful relationships with elderly people who suffer from dementia.

    Unfortunately a lot of us are now a dying breed, especially those RMN's who trained in the 60's & 70's when the training we recieved prepared us to provide a high standard of care for those elderley people who also had dementia. If we failed then we would suffer the consequences.

    I am not disputing that there have been developments in the knowledge we have about dementia, but it isn't just about knowledge it is also about putting that knowledge into practice.

    With the care of people suffering with dementia placed in the hands of the private sector where in most cases profit comes before standards even if we have the tools, are we able to use them? From what l have seen and heard the answer is no.

    One or two trained nurses on a shift, what do we expect when it comes to standards!!

    I really hope that Cathy Stone the Director of Nursing improves the care that is provided, but its going to take a lot more than a "knowing me" book and stickers to do it.

    When did it all start - 1982 when the Conservative government of the day imposed general management on the NHS.

    Reduce time spent in hospital was the key to their economic policy at the time. Set up the conveyor belt system of care.

    Yes "spin" wasn't just the way of the politicians, it infected the NHS as well. Senior managers did not stand up and be counted when things went wrong, they looked to deflect blame onto those at the coalface. Hence the preoccupation with documentation.

    Unfortunately nurses do make mistakes from time to time, but when this happens we should be open and honest from the start and not try to find excuses. Pay up the compensation that is due and make sure the error is not repeated.

    We have been guilty of paying off incompetent managers with golden handshakes. Why? If they are incompetent and make a claim, defend it and make sure that the NHS is not seen as an easy touch.

    Is it any wonder that the general public now view NHS as well as nurses as they do policitians?
