AS A MENTOR I KNOW MENTORING IS A COMPLEX AND DIFFICULT ROLE SOMETIMES,WE ARE EXPECTED TO SUPPORT STUDENTS ALSO TO ASSESS THEM---TWO POTENTIALLY CONFLICTING ROLES.BUT WE HAVE A ROLE AS A MENTOR TO SUPPORT, SUPERVISE AND TO FACILITATE STUDENT'S LEARNING AND AS WELL AS TO ASSESS THEM AT THE SAME TIME IN THEIR CLINICAL PLACEMENT,AT THE END OF PLACEMENT WE NEED TO IDENTIFY WHETHER A STUDENT HAS ACHIEVED THE EXPECTED STANDARDS OF PROFICIENCY FOR SAFE AND EFFECTIVE PRACTICE.IT'S DIFFICULT TO FAIL A STUDENT BUT WE NEED TO REMEMBER THAT IT'S OUR DUTY TO ASSESS STUDENTS IF THEY ARE COMPETENCE OF THEIR ROLE AND SAFE IN PRACTICE.MY ADVISE IS, IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS REGARDING THEIR OVER-ALL PERFORMANCE YOU NEED TO RAISED/HIGHLIGHTED THE ISSUES/PROBLEMS EARLY.ASSESS HOW OFTEN FACE-TO-FACE MEETINGS WILL OCCUR, ON THIS MEETING YOU NEED TO RAISE ANY CONCERNS OR ISSUES, GIVE YOUR OVER-ALL FEEDBACK AND ASK THE STUDENT IF SHE/HE HAS ANY CONCERNS/PROBLEMS. SUMMARIZE ANY AGREEMENT THAT HAVE BEEN REACHED AND DOCUMENT ALL OF THIS, ALL THE TIME.IF YOU NEED MORE SUPPORT YOU CAN ASK YOUR COLLEAGUES STAFFS/MENTORS,YOUR MANAGER OR YOU CAN DISCUSS THIS MATTER TO THE STUDENT'S TUTOR, PLT OR YOU CAN CONTACT THE SCHOOL OF NURSING FOR SOME ADVISE.GOODLUCK!!!

I AGREE THAT STUDENT NURSES NEED TO SPEND MORE TIME IN CLINICAL AREA OR LONGER PLACEMENT.BECAUSE NURSING,IT'S NOT A TRIAL AND ERROR ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AFTER PATIENT OR DOING NURSING PROCEDURES.STUDENT NURSES NEED A GOOD AND EXPERIENCED MENTOR AS WELL ,THIS IS VERY SIGNIFICANT TO DEVELOP THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN NURSING.THEY NEED TO WORK AND SUPERVISED BY THEIR MENTORS IN PRACTICE SETTING AT LEAST 40% DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY IN THEIR CLINICAL PLACEMENT.I KNOW THAT THIS IS QUITE DIFFICULT SOMETIMES BECAUSE OF SHORT STAFFS,SICKNESS PROBS. ETC...BUT AS A MENTOR IT'S OUR ROLE TO ASSESS IF THE STUDENT IS CAPABLE OF SAFE AND EFFECTIVE PRACTICE AT THE END OF THE PLACEMENT.I THINK WE NEED TO GIVE MORE SUPPORT TO THE STUDENTS AS WELL AS TO THE MENTORS TO ACHIEVE THIS OBJECTIVES.MENTORING IS A WORTH-REMEMBERING EXPERIENCE.I BELIEVED THAT GOOD/BAD MENTORING INFLUENCED A LOT TO WHAT KIND OF NURSES WE ARE PRODUCING/NURTURING.THAT'S MENTORS ARE KEY TO THE SUCCESS IN NURSING.
