1. Freshen up
- If you’re wondering what to wear, always opt for smart and formal. Better to be overdressed than underdressed.
- Keep it modest. Tight with lots of cleavage won’t help to encourage your interviewer to see you as a professional.
- Take your CV with you and carry it in a smart bag or folder to prevent it getting crumpled.
- If you are travelling to an interview, take a second to freshen up before you enter the interview room. Spinach in your teeth and an untucked shirt won’t impress.
2. Perfect a firm handshake
- The handshake is the first physical connection an interviewer will make with you. It communicates something different than your dress or appearance. A firm handshake will show that you’re confident, eager and ready to take on the challenge of a new job.
3. Look them in the eye
- Eye contact lets the interviewer know you’re engaged and interested in what they’re talking about
- Try to look up when you are speaking and not down at your feet or hands
- A smile shows that you’re happy to be there and communicates a bit about your personality too. Show them how pleasant you are to have around.
5. Don’t fiddle
- When you’re nervous it’s tempting to calm your nerves by fiddling with your hair, your chair - in fact anything that’s close to hand. But try to make a concerted effort to sit still and relax. You’ll appear much more in control and professional and hopefully you’ll feel more relaxed as well.
6. Belive yourself to be confident
- If you believe you’re confident, then the employer will be more inclined to believe it as well
7. Use open body language
- Open body lanaguage will communicate that you’re feeling confident, even if you’re not feeling too steady inside. Keep your arms uncrossed, sit up straight without slouching into your seat, uncross your legs and place your feet level on the floor.

- A sense of humour and a positive attitude can help put everyone in a good mood. Show that you’re excited to be given this opportunity and that you would be a great co-worker
