Global maternity mortality declines

  • Comment

The number of women dying from complications during pregnancy and childbirth has fallen by more than one third in the past 18 years, according to a report from the World Health Organisation and other bodies.

The data revealed that 358,000 women died from childbirth and pregnancy related complications in 2008, compared with 546,000 in 1990.

The rate of decline is less than half of what is needed if the millennium development goal of cutting maternity mortality by 75 per cent between 1990 and 2015 is to be achieved.
