GPs rely on out-of-hours service

  • Comment
GPs are increasing relying on their out-of-hours services and are unwilling to make home visits to patients, a study has shown.
Researchers at the Peninsula Medical School in south west England interviewed 27 patients who had recently used on of the three services providing GP cover in the evening and weekends.

Those interviewed raise issues including uncertainty about whether they should seek emergency care.

They also felt that non-medically qualified call handlers did not always understand the urgency of the situation and that doctors were reluctant to carry out home visits.
