Government guidelines on infection control in care homes are to be published next year

The Code of Practice for the Prevention and Control of Infection in Social Care will be consulted on in early 2009.

Carole Fry, nursing officer for communicable diseases at the Department of Health, said: ‘The code is looking at standard decontamination, staff training, the occupational health of staff, and including policy and procedures in some people’s job descriptions.. Care homes increasingly care for people with very complex needs.’

She added: ‘Infection can’t be eliminated where people are sick and vulnerable.’
